Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder made those words in multiple conversations in the wake of England's loss in the second Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" within the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

But, following Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, he revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Series Victory

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable three-nil advantage with three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes series defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate future in the side, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns versus the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley concluded.
